PPDT narration: five habits that cost candidates the screening

PPDT is the first hurdle at SSB and the one most candidates prepare for the least, because it looks deceptively simple: look at a blurred picture for 30 seconds, write a story in a minute, narrate it in under a minute, then discuss it as a group. Yet it screens out more candidates at Stage 1 than any written knowledge gap does.

Assessors aren't grading your creative writing. They're reading Officer Like Qualities off the choices you make under time pressure — what you notice in an ambiguous image, whether your character solves a problem or waits for one to be solved, and how you hold your narration together when six other candidates are competing for airtime in the discussion that follows.
